The Laboiko Project
laboratory and hotel unit
Megalochori, Lesvos
Megalochori is a mountainous village in the southern part of Lesvos. The first inhabitants came to the district in about 1400 AD. Today there are only 280 villagers living there. It is well known worldwide for its natural beauty. Megalochori is surrounded by lushis green pine tree forests. There are many springs of fresh running water which come from mountains. The village has many old abandoned houses and buildings that show the history of the district. It has two big churches which were built in the 14th century. The abandoned houses together with the beauty of the village have inspired me to do the Laboiko project. |
The Laboiko is an agritouristic unit which consists of four laboratories, two hotels and an info point. In the laboratories the guests have the opportunity to learn traditional recipes, to help make them and to buy products to take back with them. In the guestrooms a part for sleeping, one can also learn the way of life of the villagers. The info point is the central square of the village where the guests can get information about the unit and the history of the surroundings.

The goal of the project is to upgrade the community and to make Megalochori a tourist attraction worldwide. In general, we want to upgrade agro tourism, to emphasize the cultural identity, to create working opportunities for young people and to promote the local products.
The name of the unit is LABOIKO a compound word, laboratory and oiko (the greek word οίκος means home). In addition, the logo of the unit is a bird called Cuculus. The cuculus design has two meanings
a) the slope above the village is called koukos (cuculus),
b) the way that cuculus parasites in other birds’ nests is the way that we construct new buildings in the old ruins (parasitic architecture).

The uses that have been
chosen are a Music School and an Art café. Specifically, there will be classes
in which musical instruments and phonetics will be taught. The art café will be
a place where visitors can relax listening to good music and to read a big variety of books. Finally, the exterior will be used by the café for events and
concerts of the music school.
